Duct Systems and Air Conditioners Must be Sized Appropriately

If a duct system is undersized for the heating and cooling equipment, and has been pinched to fit around structural framing during installation, it may have low air flow rates and high air velocities. Low air flow rates cause the heating and cooling equipment to operate inefficiently. High air velocities increase noise. Neither condition is desirable. In addition, improperly sized supply and return ducts can create differences in air pressure in various zones of the house, driving conditioned air out of the house and drawing unconditioned air in. Determining the proper size and airflow rates for ducts is part of "balancing" the system.
